If streaks of grey that could have been clouds weren't covering the sun, one could see its light slip past the horizon, if those dreary grey puffs hasn't been steadily and persistently leaking upon the earth then maybe more then just a few brave or foolhardy souls would brave the darkening streets, most were safe at home.

This is not true for the Sacramento's Forsaken. No. Tonight they gather, purpose clear, to investigate the spiritual side of their claimed territory and maybe, just maybe, prove themselves worthy and gain a Totem....

The Pack's biggest, and technically, only bitch, waited. Resolutely ignoring the rain. Folding and refolding a dirty, dog eared page. A simple thing with simple graphite lines. Some of the less then useful things found when the then trio of wolves had poked and prodded, searched and scoured this side of their Locus.

Already being creased and worn, the lines were long past gadding and had nearly turned to smudges but there was enough remaining to know it was another something or other about the Sacramento Railyards Project

Whoop de frickin do. More construction.

At least it was more interesting then rocks and wind blown garbage.

    Sloph. Sloph. Sloph.

Muffled sounds of someone stumbling through the darkening downpour echoed through the construction site before the rumble of near transit washed through the area. Just as the light rail cars had passed a splash could be heard.

“Fuck. Fuck. Fuckity Fuck,” grumbled a young man's voice. “Who the hell leaves a shovel in the middle of fricken nowhere? Seriously. No pride in workmanship.”

The same voice laughed out. “Of course, I'm the one to find it. Hmmmm. I'm the one to fiiiinnnnd it. Right.” The voice had gone to from good humor to something more sober. “Gotcha.”

    Sloph. Sloph. Sloph.

From out of the rain curtain the silhouette of a slender person carrying a shovel could be seen passing by and disappearing into the downpour again.

A few moments later, a howl weaves into the rainfall, echoing low through the construction site. Not one of alarm or distress but rather reverence. Earnest, passionate reverence.

Old shoes and a ragged button down clash with the pants but that's not the point. Yellow eyes fade away to something more human as the Irraka comes to a stop near the Rahu. Fewer words the better with her. So a nod. Expecting this to be rougher than a normal day the hand wraps stay at home. The other hadn't made the Hisil sound friendly. Then the howl rolls across the railyard.

A glance at Viola and Chris lets a bit of the Wolf come out. Muscle, hair, and growth push the Irraka's height even higher.

Suckiest part about rain? Makes a good smoke a bitch to pull off. Tristan could use a smoke right now. Nice fat cigar, maybe. Instead he's trudging out to meet the pack and do something meaningful. Why the hell it had to be tonight is a question he'd save for a rainy --- he'd save it.

A sound like a howl cuts through the rain. The pack is close. It's a welcome feeling. Might even offset the rain and lack of smokes. Shit. An actual pack. No more squatters. No more lone wolves.

As the sopping outline of Viola comes into view, Tristan let's out a sharp whistle.

A little course, maybe, but it beats 'What brings you here?' or something even less witty. The second shape catches him off-guard, though. No stopping the inane question that follows. "What's with the shovel, kid?" Odie's still a bit of an unknown. All over the place and a little too out there for Tristan's tastes. But then, he doesn't have to like the kid. The pack is bigger than that.

And there, a third. Another unknown. Just a little less colorful than the kid. "You came. Guess you're sticking with us, then?"

On this night when darkness shrouds the land and life giving water feeds what earth is not shielded by moulded stone, Hector, Cahalith of the Iron Masters, risks it. Adapt or die. He leaves behind his man-shape and his ragged clothes at his camp, some distance from the Railyards.

Clothed in the fur of the wolf, Hector makes his way to the Locus, eyes gleaming, tongue lolling, panting in anticipation when he stops between shadows along the way.

He arrives, low to the ground, fur heavy with water, ears alert. This is the pack's territory now.

Thanks to the distance he must traverse, the Alpha is last to arrive. His smell may be distracted by the rain but he can still rely on his sight and sharper hearing. The howl - a human imitation of a true howl - allows him to home in on the group. He responds with one of his own: joy of the hunt, joy of pack, welcome, and perhaps a little challenge. Can't help that, he is human (kinda) after all. And howling is all about emotion...

Perhaps a little too florid and technical. Maybe the others won't notice.

    <<Come. Pack. Hunt. ...>>

OK. And maybe trying to force spirit's tongue, the First Language, through a lupine snout isn't the best way to communicate. That isn't going to stop Hector from trying as he breaks cover and bounds over.

No Essence expendable. Defaulted to Vitae for notes.

In the rain a young pup yowls, asking for his Mother's blessing. Untried rite master that he is, fails to carry the rite to completion, but the sound is magnificent even from his man-throat. It carries long and loud, exalting Mother Moon and thanking her for his auspicious find, which us now carried in his hand.

As the young pup tried to slip between the rain and an audience, he managed to find the Pack's designated meeting place.

The sight that greats him is an intimidating one. To one side the rahu, glaring out into the rain, the other a towering mass of muscles and hair.

A whistle interrupts any confrontation and Officer Hardt steps near. Viola greets their beta with more animation and deference then the eye roll and head tilt the others received.

All is well, slight conversation interrupts their persistent pitter patter of the rain, that is until the voice if their Alpha splits the sky!

Arriving on four legs he is a sight to see!

Second only to Viola's change in posture. She adverts her eyes, and her aggressive stance changes to that of submission.

He was Alpha and Viola wouldn't contest that.

First Tongue spoken and the rahu sheds her man-skin to slip into fur. Their Alpha wanted to hunt and who was this Meninna to argue?

How quickly would the others follow? Would they follow? And just where would Hector-wolf lead...?

    Odie

Officer Hardt had found Odie in his mud-splattered raincoat moments after finishing his prayer ritual. Just in time, too, as Viola was glaring through the rain, a big furry Dalu at her side. Chris, the other newcomer, he guessed. The young man hadn't been sure if he was being challenged or not, he'd always been bad at the wolfy subtext.

Now that the officer was here, he found he could breath again. He shrugged and smiled when the older man asked about the shovel. Explaining that he'd tripped over it and thought it auspicious sounded silly or stupid. Unless, you were a Child of the Gibbous Moon. He put the shovel safely off to the side so it wouldn't be an issue.

When the man talk about Odie staying, he nodded brightly with a toothy smile Before he could make a verbal comment a stirring howl cut through the rain.

It spoke to his inner wolf. It was a call to pack! A summoning to hunt!

Wait. A Hunt? He was a City Wolf. Couldn't they just order Chinese?

Then the Alpha strolled in from the rain.

Now THAT! THAT was a WOLF!

Odie couldn't help but tilt his head to bear his neck to the Great Beast. He might have fought the impulse, but this was what he was here for. He took a leap of faith and put his trust in the Wolf.

    The Alpha.

    His Alpha.

He was filled with hope.... right up to the point when Viola slipped into her fur. That was optional? Right?

The young Uratha wondered if the pack could accept his anthropocentric nature. He could hunt just as well on two legs as four. Maybe better. Either way, he was shit at hunting and stealth and most of the wolfy stuff.

Besides, Odie decided. This was the City. It would be wise to have at least one of them in Hishu form so if one of the furries were spotted, there'd be someone able to deal with things. With guile rather then bloodshed.

The young man glanced to Officer Hardt to see if the older man was going furry or keeping to his skin.

Odie watched the Alpha respectfully. Patiently. The young man couldn't help study the great beast's maw with a wry grin. Didn't Hector's Hishu form have a few chipped teeth?

The next howl to reach his ears must have come from a true, lupine throat. A sound Tristan has heard on the hunt, before. Hector: reluctant Alpha. Eyeing the others assembled here, the older cop snorts. The corners of his mouth turn downward into a frown - an impressed one. Their budding pack cuts an intimidating profile.

Since Hector's wearing a wolf's skin, Tristan doesn't see a reason not to join him. His body shifts and shrinks down to his Urhan form, and he almost immediately shakes his sopping-wet fur. Tristan-wolf approaches the Alpha and lets out a low whine, with his head down. Acknowledgement.

The grey wolf spins around, with his yellow eyes peering at the others. <<Hunt.>> he echoes with his wolf's tongue.

Essense marked by Vitae for instant shapeshift.

A toothy grin is Chris's reply to the officer's question before he nods his head deeply. Respect where Respect is due. A shallower nod to the other new guy. Shit happens, nothing personal. Eyes don't wait long before the Alpha rolls in. The second howl rolls through Chris and he breathes it in. Challenge, hunt, welcome.

As the others fall to four legs or stand and submit Chris looks at Hector for a moment. Almost..odd? Kneeling down on one knee Chris opens his hands palms out, bends his neck, and looks at the ground. It's wrong to submit without a fight but then again maybe others know how to do this without fights. Maybe the Storm Lord had done that to prove a point, then again they are kindred cousins to another god. A flicker of a smile and Chris bows his head to his chest. Acceptable for now.

With slow hands the Irraka unbuttons his shirt and places it on the ground. Feet kick off the untied shoes. Toes settle into water as Chris waits, watching rain hit the wet ground.

Hector paused long enough to inspect his pack.

His pack. Yes, he was going to have to get used to that now.

The inspection was followed by a peculiar 'huff' and shift in his posture as he made clear he wasn't too concerned about which form his Urdaga chose for this run. Then, nose forward, Hector bounded off to the Locus.

The Locus hadn't changed that much - it was still a portion of track - and he was privately pleased they had checked flesh-side already. Any tracks, spoor, or other hints to the Locus' nature would have been obliterated by the rain. Still, he made a point of snuffling around while the others gathered; after all, if he could chance upon a puddle so much the better.

Finding nothing, he looked up, squared his shoulders, and forced his way between worlds.

It was clear enough that on this hunt, Hector was all business.

For reference, I have taken the full -3 penalty for crossing the Gauntlet in a 'Dense Urban' area. Possibly going extreme but I figure Saber Sloth will put the rest of you right shortly. My decision was based on the fact the railyards are next to the highly urbanised downtown area, and that the local area is in the process of being heavily developed.

I haven't gone into any details of the area. Saber Sloth will let us know if anything was turned up from the previous investigation at the Locus.
