As previously announced, the setting sun at Sutter Park opens the festival.

Art of all shapes, sizes, and composition are arrayed with placards noting the artist and their notes. Some are life-sized animals; others, hand-sized chess pieces. But everywhere, it's a display of creativity and raw craftsmanship. Some will be twined with baling wire, some glued, some welded. Fabrications of glass, metal, and even old tires litter grace the area.

PC art is welcome! Please refer to the Crafting House Rules and feel free to have worked on/prepped for this event. Questions should be directed to the Shards OOC discussion

The sweet, fragrant smells of roses mixed with lilacs emanate from her as she casts magic. The scent intensifies, bordering on intoxicating, when Life magic is cast. When Aurora casts Vulgar magic, the scent takes a nasty turn, to the putrid, nauseating odor of a rotting corpse. The stronger the magic, the more those around want to retch at the smell.

She wasn’t really sure what to expect at the art expo, but it was an excuse to get out. Not that she needed an excuse, it was just something different.

Casual dress fit the feel of the evening, so she wore black skinny jeans, cause they made her legs look awesome! Well, at least in her opinion. And a black one shoulder fitted shirt. Long hair was thrown up in a low ponytail with long pieces hanging lose here and there.

There was so much to see, and Faye found herself bouncing between displays, either chatting up the artist, or just looking at awesome art. Even though she was alone, she was clearly enjoying herself. Her personal fav thus far? So far it was the hand sized chess pieces! She never learned to play, but had always wanted to learn. That’s where she currently was, at the chess pieces, picking up various pieces, turning them over in her hand, smile on her face.

He loved these kind of events. Displays of people's creativity using bits of old steel and off cuts from previous projects. To him it was the embodiment of transformation and transition, from new objects, to discarded pieces of scrap, to being reused to create something new again.

In a way, this was the first real event in the city that was of real interest to him and, fun. Spotting Faye amongst the displays, Wayland decides to go and speak to the enchanting woman. "Hey, there's some pretty awesome pieces here. I think I saw one of the Wall-E robot dude from that kids movie back over there." He points down the path to a small display of the robot about 2 foot tall. "Thing's made of all welded nuts and bolts, looks boss as."

Kid in a candy store yo.

Mahatma Ghandi said that society's greatness and moral progress could be measured by how it treated it's animals.

Over time, that evolved to include prisoners, but it was always the bellwether of depravity instead of pulchritude. The difference, the divinity, of a nation could also be measured by it's art. And while Professor Gordon was no artist himself -- or even well versed in art -- he sometimes found himself wondering at that divinity.

Reminding himself of the beauty in a world of new-found horror.

    "It's originally Persian, I believe,"
    he added softly.

It wasn't the divinity of the painted on jeans, but the actual game pieces he'd come to look at. Curious if they had any historical references, and originating from the same culture that gave birth to Mithraism.

Despite influences from Daysha Jackson, he'd fallen into old habits: a second hand tweed blazer, mis-matched plaid shirt, and corduroy pants that were an unwholesome shade of green.

She was checking to see if the pieces were for sale, when Wayland came up.

Smiling, “Hey you.” Yeah…she hadn’t come across him in public, so she had no clue what to call him. “They are!” she exclaims, “I never learned to play, though I’d like to, but I’m hoping these pieces are for sale.” She says with excitement.

Eyes follow where he points, seeing the display, laughing, “Now that’s pretty neat! Might look awesome in the apartment. It could welcome people!” Referring to their Sanctum.

Blue eyes shift to the scruffy looking guy, “Persian?” she asks, curious. The curiosity gave way to a bright friendly smile, which she hoped would encourage him to share more.

Fisher had arrived early and set up her display. It hadn't turned out as planned and so she decided to treat it as an opportunity, make lemonade and all that. So when her initial project was a bust, she was able to cobble together another one to see how it would be received.

In one section of the display area was a sculpture made of wood with a small plaque next to it that said: Sea Urchin.

Fisher was dressed in her buckskin jacket, linen shirt, and bluejeans and was wandering around the exhibits and seeing everything that people came up with. Some of it was lamer than hers, but some of it was cool, while other things were dumb enough to come out the other side and be cool again.

Seeing Faye and Wayland , Fisher made her way over to them and gave a happy wave.

"Hey guys! How ya doing? Neat stuff huh?" She said with a smile.

    Zelda

A new face drifted through the crowd: a sight of swan necked elegance rising from a ratty, tatty ensemble of distressed jeans, scuffed boots, and a faded T that had been stretched enough to mimic an off-the-soulder piece. Zelda had re-dyed her short and deliberately mussed hair a sky blue hue: it both clashed and complimented her pale skin and generally dark clothing.

Perhaps that was this Artist's point.

The enjoyment was evident on her face though. A soft smile of sheer pleasure, a lingering stare heaped upon one piece after another, a pause close enough to listen in one on knot of conversation without forcing herself upon it.

The lissome figure pauses in front of Sea Urchin, her animated gaze turning to stilled concentration as she studies the work.

"Bon. Motion and time captured in form."

Zelda nodded in appreciation, her French accent obvious.

"Chess. It's first known appearance was in Persia, and begin to spread after the Islamic conquest."

Rory returns the smile. His eyes don't stray, and meet Faye's squarely without any hint of challenge or speculation.

"Knights, Bishops, Rooks -- they were originally different. Chariots, even elephants. There's a lot of cultural influences in art and games."
And by cultural, he also meant religious. The divinity to be found in art could often be quite literal. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt."

A friendly hand was offered to anyone who might take it. If not, it was withdrawn just as easily and casually.

"Rory. I teach religious history so I have a bad habit of thinking everyone is just waiting to be bored."

When he first heard of the art expo at Sutter Park, Strix had not truly paid it much of a mind and dismissed the event quickly enough. It wasn't that he didn't appreciate art — at least, some forms of it — but there was only so much he could take from people pretending their "art" was supposed to be something that he would never see in it.

Most certainly not while he was sober.

So why was he walking through the park and looking at the various displays of scrap bent into, admittingly sometimes impressive, shapes and forms? Good question, he wasn't too sure himself.

It was just convenience, really, since he was in the neighborhood and saw the expo and just went…why the hell not. Might as well kill some time.

Strix was dressed in a light grey t-shirt, a leather wristband watch on his right arm, a pair of blue jeans, and black sneakers. This particular pair of jeans did not have any holes in it, just as there were no oil stains visible. It was partially the reason why he kept a distance from some of the art displayed to keep it that way.

So far he had been very successful to elude any artist looking for a victim to share with just what their abstract art was supposed to be.

When he saw familiar faces, Strix headed over to join them, catching only part of what the rough-but-handsome guy was saying about a chess set made of scrap, as well. "Well, look at y'all," he drawled like a man who hardly ever talked that way, "mingling with the art community."

Strix glanced away from Faye, Wayland, and Fisher to the two other people he did not know. The woman wasn't particularly attractive, but she carried herself in a way that was still hard not to notice. The only person more distracting here was Faye.

Looking around them, his eyes fell onto the wooden sculpture. A frown quick to settle on his face as he continued to stare as if it might reveal its nature to him that way.

Is...that driftwood? He thought, making sure to not voice his question out loud and possibly insult the artist who surely was close-by.

Maybe it was the unknown woman standing nearby, in fact.

He looked back at the robot sculpture, and considered. He liked the engineering that went into it, but is it like, really something you'd want staring you in the face every time you walk in the door? Hells no bro, or, you know, there would be a ton of other choices that would suck less.

"Ahh I don't know. Maybe that fish thing would be a better choice. There's like, somethin' about little robot things that just creep me out. Like they're gonna take over the world or somethin'. "For reals. If Terminator taught us anything it's that robots bite the big one. Unless I made it. Then it's the shit son!

"Oh hey. " He says when Fisher joined them. "I know right? I'm totally leavin' this thing with somethin'. Even if it's just ideas ya know?"

Listening to the guy in the librarian outfit, the look was almost complete, just needed those old school elbow patches to really turn the look up to eleven. "Yo Chess is Persian? I thought it was like English and stuff. Used to play it a bit when I was little but, it's not really somethin' you can get by on, but, cool game though bro.". Thumbs up. He'd have given a double thumbs up, but these pants don't hold themselves up yo.
