To human eyes he looks slightly taller than average, with a lean, athletic build. His brown skin gives away his Mohawk ancestry, complementing his equally brown eyes and dark hair. He displays a military-styled haircut, shorter to the sides, and sports a few scars across his body and a particularly visible one in the form of claw marks across his face and neck. A very intense scent of forest, a mixing of pine needles, tree sap, and animal fur, characterizes him.

Those who can see through the Mask observe black-and-white feathers to the sides of his face, that fuse seamlessly with his skin and hairline and close to his golden eyes. His teeth are unusually sharp, displaying fangs that are hard to categorize as belonging to a specific predator, although they most closely resemble a wolf's or some other canine's.

Something... sour. He sniffed audibly but made no comment. It might be a sign that something sinister was lying around the kitchen, or it could be bad plumbing. No need to turn the visit into a Halloween special just yet. While Green talked he tapped the walls lightly, listening for hollow sounds. If any of the others looks at him he shrugs, "Just checking," before continuing. There was more to it, though, as the taps seemed to take on an almost rhythmic cadence before returning to the same monotonous pattern. It was almost unconscious, but it proved helpful.

Frances paused in her retreat, looking up at Green a little suspiciously but unable to find any real fault in his questions. "I've lived here for about thirty years now, and I haven't had any significant remodeling done; just a bit of plumbing and things like that. Sometimes there are squirrels or mice in the walls, but they've never bothered me, I just thump the wall and they go quiet. But the house is old and whoever built it probably wasn't a professional; not from what I can see, anyway."

While her claims on the technical knowledge of whoever built the house might be mystifying for Ramona and Nathan, Green had an easier time seeing what she could be talking about. The walls were much thicker than necessary, and the wall behind the stove was no exception; the overall skeleton of the house was quite blunt. But, beyond the admittedly odd shape of the room, the varying slopes of the floors and ceiling had little to suggest they were due to anything more than an old house on a settling foundation.

"And I don't really see why you'd need to turn off the power, but if you need to, I suppose you'd better do it. Just don't forget to turn it back on before you go." For all that the Mountain was more than triple her size, Frances looked like she might have some choice words with him if he forgot.

While that exchange was taking place, Ramona's interview with the oven was going as well as could be expected: it was a functional, decently clean, gas stovetop and oven. For what it was and what she could see with the gas still on, it was in good working order. Unfortunately for the Ogre, however, kneeling to inspect it seemed to have brought her closer to the source of the unpleasant smell. At the very least, she knew it wasn't anything that had been left in the oven.

Nathan's wall tapping was viewed by the old woman with veiled skepticism, but she didn't comment. Briefly, her eyes slid past him to the goings-on of the child's party next door; after a hard blink, she looked back to Green. "If that's all, I'll be in the other room."

Frances is trying to leave again and this time she is determined: if anyone wants to keep talking to her they will have to follow her

...not that she's moving very fast

Nose wrinkled, Ramona withdraws from the oven. "Aw, ugh," she says to the guys as Frances departs, "Something stinks over there. Oven looks fine, though. Working. Clean." She raises a hand to waft air over her nose. She sits back on her knees a moment, with a curious expression, then looks up and around the kitchen. It's interesting, hearing this house was built by an amateur. It could provide some insight into what's going on. Maybe it has to do with the pipes? Or the interior framework of the house. For the moment, she tries to get a feel of the room, and look around for any of the little semi-mystical oddities Green mentioned when he asked for her help.

    Green nodded thoughtfully.

"Thanks for your help, ma'am," he rumbled with a hand stroking his chin.

He waits for the elderly woman to disappear before swinging into action, placing his heavy bag down with a clank by the sink unit. He eyed the odd shape of the room, his gaze running over the most suspicious wall and the ceiling - there he was looking for the tell tale scars of old walls.

"What we got so far?" he asked at last, keen to gauge his allies' opinions. And: "You think we should draw this out? I want to be around when the crying starts."

He busied himself as if he were actually on a job. It serves two purposes: cover and because he is being thorough and making sure the kitchen really is functional. He will temporarily cut the utilities and check over the pipes - to give his associates time to investigate.

Is there anything particularly strange about the shape of the room or its alignment? Specifically, is the wall behind the stove hollow. Do you require any Craft rolls from me or shall we just waive it? If he finds standard problems with the utilities he'll fix them as he goes.

"Y'know, coming from you that sounded... disturbing," he answered Green, somewhat sardonically. "Yeah, maybe. Though unless we manage to pin down the source before then it won't do us any good. I'd rather not be dragged to a madhouse for screaming at walls."

He stopped tapping and knelt down where Ramona was a moment ago, inspecting the oven. He wasn't so much looking as sniffing, trying to figure out where that godawful stench came from. He made a face when it filled his oversensitive nose, but trudged on. Great. Now even when playing good Samaritan I end up covered in shit.

Ramona's cursory examination of the room brought her back to the windows. The majority of the house was markedly devoid of any occult trappings, at least to the casual eye, but the windows were laden with more of the hanging glass spheres, and even a handful of other things: bits of coral, the blue glass evil-eye charms, small glass bottles full of what looked like salt or sugar. And, beneath the lock on either window, a small dark smudge that might be blood.

    Intelligence+Occult, please

The basic run-down Green gave the space revealed little out of the ordinary: her appliances were old and probably finicky, but they ran. The pipes would want work, but in a couple of years. All in all, what his inspection served to illustrate was something he had already commented on: Frances' home was very well taken care of. The dust, grease, and general food waste that would normally collect behind and around the stove was minimal, the area beneath the refrigerator was largely free of dust bunnies or small household items. And, the wall behind the stove was most certainly hollow.

I'm waiving the need to roll for that wall since it was already partially discussed IC

With his augmented senses, it wasn't difficult for Nathan to locate the source of the smell. In the cabinet just to the left of the oven, three shallow bowls sat on the bottom shelf. One was full of what looked like molding porridge, the second of sour milk, and the last was harder to tell beyond the dead ants, but it seemed to hold honey.

And, beyond those distracting smells was something else, partially masked by the odds and ends in the fairly bare cupboard. Wet fur, maybe?

His cover attended to (and with many answers to his initial thoughts now confirmed) Green took the time to scratch at that nagging thought that had been with him since he heard of this strange case - and which had blossomed the longer he was inside the home.

Glass spheres, dream catchers, brown smudges and lumps of salt at the windows. He knew enough of the occult properties of such points of egress, and the means of barring them. The question remained, did Frances?

The window was on his way to the hollow wall and the stove anyway, really.

"Yeah..." A sound, a sigh, a thought process, dropped from his mouth as he stared critically.

The longer the two of them looked, the easier it was to tell that the specifics of what hung in the windows was irrelevant. Bits and pieces of folklore from different cultures, some things that had been created for television shows and slipped into the common vernacular, some completely unfamiliar, all strung together. Some charms were specifically to ward off entry to homes, others to protect from the evil eye, even a couple that were thought to keep specific supernatural beings at bay. What was being kept out didn't seem to matter: if it wasn't a human with the intentions of a saint, Frances didn't want it in her house.

To Ramona, the blood seemed like just another item in the grab-bag. To Green, it didn't fit quite as neatly. There was precedent, in certain tales, for the use of blood as protection. Blood baked into food that protected those that ate it, blood worked into jewelry to create charms, droplets of blood that sang to distract pursuers. But beneath the glass oddments, clinking brightly against each other in a riot of color, the smudges patterned with the whorls of a fingerprint held a very different personality.

Everything else had been mass produced, purchased, and hung up: impersonal elements intended to put a mind at ease. And the blood seemed meant to look a part of it, another oddity from a superstitious woman, but its use was visceral, personal. Where the other charms were self contained objects, the blood brought with it the potential of ritual, with dubious connotations and very little context.
