Star notices a young twenty-something girl in a nearby window. Shielding herself behind blinds and curtains.

This might not be CSI. But The Wire isn't far off.

Cop cars come in pairs, screaming and yelling with angry blue-red lights. Haggard looking beat-cops step out of the cars and one of them checks the body-camera they are forced to wear. Muttering angrily to himself. The other nervously steps out, and takes in the house as haggard looking as his partner is. Beat-cops are always first. Then it's detectives like Molina and Barton, busy with their own problems.

Police officers have a particular walk. It's heavy, plodding and the pair of beat-cops go up to the front-door, knocking and waiting for a response that won't come. There's a protocol for entering a house. Like a mythical Vampire, a police-officer needs to be invited in unless there's probable cause.

    What? NO.

Silent signs answer Avis' hands. The very first signs, before words were codified, signs made with eyes that narrowed, then widened as outrage erupted like Vesuvius. That's not The Plan. That's so far down on the list of plans, below Getting Arrested and Killing Cops. That far down.

A finger pumped at the door. Maybe a yell at July to get in the back, way back, would have followed, but July was already climbing in and the indignation fizzled out like a firecracker in the rain.

Ever have one of those moments? When everything is moving too fast, changing, where your brain is just... scrambled eggs? Cracked eggs, yo. Dead people lying around, that your caballie just murderized. A busted scene, with questionable intel. Po po on the go go. Your girlfriend suggesting a three way with Wyatt Earp. All anyone can manage is to throw the autopilot on and...

    Lights.

...wait for things to slow down and the hamster wheel to start spinning again. It's the red and blue flashing lights. Like a morning alarm, bringing reality crashing back in. Avis, sitting in the passenger seat, door open. Him, leaning half in, half out of the van. There's one of her legs sticking out and he's missing a shirt. The startled jump at the sirens is real. Wide eyes and chagrin. It's a cultivated expression, just the right mix of fear, embarrassment, and apology. Wide eyes and chagrin as the van is slowly entered.

    Started up.

    Put into drive.

    And rolls away.

Vulgar: Color drains from the immediate area and depth perception becomes temporarily skewed, everything seeming to draw in uncomfortably close, making rooms smaller and all but distant objects seem in reach.
Vice: Color drains from Avis and her facial features seem indistinct and grainy, as though her identity is growing less defined.
Virtue: Colors appear more vibrant and everything seems to become grander in scale.

"We're going to need a new van," Avis sighed as they pulled away, flashing lights scintillating in the rear view mirror...

Sitting down in the van he could see the lights and wasn't sure if they had just missed more trouble or if it would still get them. Instead he slid to the back of the van and took off his hat. He looked at it breifly and realized, despite how much he liked it, he would have to leave it home for a while. He knew others had been watching and if they would remember anything about him it would definitely be his hat. Maybe this was a chance to be more subtle. Clearly he didn't start that trend today.

At Avis' words he didn't respond. More words would need to be spoken before he apologized for being less than subtle. Though to be honest, if you wanted subtle you don't bring the guy with two guns and a cowboy hat. He'd try and help with the vehicle aspect, if he could, later.

Nothing is more noticeable or suspicious as a vehicle peeling away from the scene of a crime. Just like in school, where if you pretended well enough the Hall Monitors would not stop you, obeying all traffic laws arouses no suspicion.

Beat-cops wait long enough, and start speaking into their shoulders. The partner steps inside.

The Threats roll away like a sail-boat on the high-seas.
