(1407) The Duel

Quiet filled the circle in the moments before the arrival of the assembled Magi of the Sacrament. Carved and painted words, sayings and quotes meant to inspire, raced along the walls. It was late afternoon, and the mid summer sun fell through the stained glass windows in ribbons of multicolored light. For most, the Gothic architecture of the Circle of Creation was familiar and awe inspiring with it's vaulted ceilings and rib architecture. For others, the place was intimately familiar: a place to train, live, and grow. For a few, however, the place was unfamiliar, known only in passing as one of the keystone bastions of the embattled Consilium of the Sacrament.

The floors, sparkling and cleaned, were to once again play host to the machinations of the Wise. Each trying to get a leg up over each other in the never ending push-pull of the fight over Magic itself.

Today was to be different. A buzz ripped through the Wise of the Sacrament. Excitement, trepidation, weariness, and apathy all mixed with the knowledge that the Circle was to be the venue for a Duel Arcane. A month prior, the challenge was laid – Aquinas of the Vox Draconis, a former apprentice to the former Hierarch Peter Cartright challenged Avalon, who up till that moment, was thought to be their Apostate Hierarch. A woman who could cultivate the relationships with every Order. This, from all accounts, did not happen.

The challenge that was inevitable. Most of the weary members of the Consilium have long been expressing their displeasure of their 'absentee' Hierarch in private. All the while privately bemoaning the mess that their Consilium has become. In this, the revelation that Avalon was actually a member of the Visus Draconis and sent by San Francisco, made sense.

However, a Consilium without Concord was no Consilium. The more paranoid among them, thought this was what San Francisco wanted all along.

Pride, however, would not let Avalon simply step down.

So the Challenge was accepted and the Circle was prepared for the arrival of Sacramento's Consilium.

Leo was at the Circle waiting nervously. A duel between Heirarchs for the fate of Sacramento? Nothing could draw more of the wrong attention today. Sight and Armor was up, and the Glock and machete strapped to his waste said 'Security' rather bluntly. Or at least Leo hoped it would. In truth a look of agitation and anxiety made the First Talon look on edge and ready to strike.

Today was not the day to fuck with Leo. He was here, and he was working.

Today was going to be a momentous day, a shift in the winds of a new Consilium, and just like himself there were many here that were new to the city, and Jonokuchi hoped deep down this day would reveal a guiding light.

He was yet to know if Aquinas was that light or of Avalon still carried the torch. Either way, it was going to be interesting.

After spending the early morning in preparation for the Duel, Jonokuchi had been diligently cleaning and sweeping before establishing his spells for the day. As normal, the protection was unchanged and slipped on like a familiar kimono, but he had opted to see the distortions and realities of Time rather than Space. Adaptability is Strength, he mused as he headed down from his dorm to the Circle proper, still marveling at the headquarters of the Arrows and Guardians. It would continue to impress.

Seeing Leo already in attendance, the giant sumo gave his cabalmate a respectful bow but said nothing. Idle chitchat was not this Warlock's way. Taking up a space nearby, he crossed his arms and tucked his hands into the wide sleeves of his simple beige and black kimono.

Idun arrives with her black and red hair done up in corn braids while wearing a red T-Shirt and black jeans. She's wearing simple silver studs, a matching silver necklace sporting an ruby pendant, and on her left wrist is a wrist watch. Her cell phone, keys, and wallet are in her jean's pocket, she left her purse under her car seat.

Seeing Leo and Jonokuchi, she decides to visit with Jono. "Hey Jonokuchi. How have you been?" She asks him.

Bishop was dressed formally for the occasion, a silvery gray business suit with a black tie, completed by metal cufflinks and a pair of leather shoes. Even though he resented these kinds of dealings, because they attracted far too much attention, he would not miss this for the world. What he was immensely curious about, was the question, wether or not the present Hierarch would actually try to maintain his position or step down with a fight to save face. In Bishops opinion, Avalon had lost her biggest asset, when she had been called out by Aquinas. Her hand had been forced and she now needed to operate in the open and any action she took would be interpreted under the light of affiliation of the Guardians - which would mean most people would be against it, just for the sake of being in opposition to the "despicable secret police" of the awakened community.
One could not do sensible politics under such influences, so it would be best, if Aquinas took the reigns. It would simply mean, that the political actions of the Guardians returned back under the radar and a smoke screen of lies.
Which was fine.
Also, Bishop was curious about the abilities of Aquinas himself, since he was expecting him to become the new Hierarch. And since his throne would be as false as any other, it was prudent to assess his skills.

Bishop made his way through the Circle, giving nods to the present magi and picking a seat somewhere close to the main event.

The Sybil's Sight was becoming easier to bear. If this kept up, he' wouldn't have to rely on the mercurial Arcana of Time. He still had to squint, but the whole dream-trip vibe of the Sight no longer bothered him. The sunglasses helped too. Screwing up the scrap of paper into a deep pocket, the Libertine hurried over to the tall gothic building to which he had been summoned.

A throb of excitement and confusion bubbled through him. He'd never seen how the Diamond Orders resolved their problems. He'd never expected the Diamond Orders to do so as openly as this, either. He'd heard of the Duel Arcane, sure. But this was something else?

What the hell is this going to be like? Spell slinging? Kung Fu? Anime Fu! Now that would be cool! Wait a sec... what ever happened to a good old vote? Oh yeah - pre democratic secret societies... Wonder how they'll frame the ritual shit? Thoughts raced and bubbled through his mind as he ducked into the dim, deceptively serene interior.

He took off his glasses and ambled toward where the Awakened gathered, chain jingling in his belt.

"Sup?" He ventured as he drew near.

Today was the day. Orpheus was sure others were feeling the pressure of this upcoming duel. The feeling going through the Mystagogue's was one of silent anxiety.

For all he's heard, Aquinas seemed to be the man to throw one's weight behind now. Not being the type to make snap decisions, Orpheus was unsure. Nobody had any guarantee's that Aquinas was going to do better. Since everyone was sure he couldn't do any worse, though, it'd have to do.

Sight and Shield were up, Orpheus knew better now than to show up to the circle with anything less. He enters silently after giving a nod to Leo, and approaches the group that seemed to be forming.

Orpheus doesn't add anything to the beginnings of the conversation, though. He's busy thinking of other things. Mostly catching up with his announcements after having so unceremoniously dropped the ball on Veiled Threats. Their announcement would come first.

It'd have to be before the duel itself took place. Depending on how that went Orpheus considered the possibility of him losing his position as Herald immediately afterwards to be... Significant.

Orpheus makes a quick about-face and heads to Leo. "I'll be catching up on my announcements after the doors close." Just a simple heads up. Leo's also got a job to do, so he wouldn't be taking up too much of the First Talon's time.

Striker didn't know Avalon from Aquinas and didn't give a rat's arse who was in charge. But he sure as hell wanted to see the Duel Arcane and he wasn't about to stay ignorant about who the new Heirarch was either. The Aussie Arrow actively tried to keep clear of the back-stabbing and talking in corners, but he looked to Leo as his order head and Leo had made his position clear, so if he didn't get what he wanted . In Striker's mind Aquinas was already Heirarch, but at the same time it was still in the 'don't care' corner until something made it more relevant.

He entered the Circle without preconceptions and not knowing what to expect.

Everyone seemed quiet. Almost like a funeral. He saw a bunch of familiar faces where Leo, Jonokuchi, Idun, Crowley and another mage he hadn't met were starting to clump up. He decided that instead of joining them, he'd take the opportunity to ask someone who may know something about this some questions.

He strode over to Bishop and sat sideways on a chair to his left, his arm slung over the back.
"G'day mate. Bishop right? Hey have you seen one of these things before?"

It matters in form only. A consilium without a council is not a consilium at all. The charter is not enforced and Avalon brings embarrassment to herself and the city. Still, this is a good opportunity to network and find the local Deacon in charge of the factotum exam. Just because there's no actual consilium at this precise moment in time doesn't mean that after Avalon is chased from the city there won't be.

Beside, it should make for a good show and anyone who brings great dishonor to their society shall be cast out to prostrate themselves humbly for admittance again or be banished forever. And there's a rumor that she's brought further dishonor to the Visus is just another black mark against her. And just as bad, she's an Enchanter as well. It's like the list never ends.

So a show it is. It almost should have been dinner and a show.

She finds a seat, dressed in all black. A long black dress and a light fabric black cape with a hood that covers most of her curls. A single adornment of a silver fox hangs from a silver necklace, standing in stark contrast to the dark fabrics and her skin.

She doesn't know anything about Aquinas, but she does know that he's the only person in the city that's had the balls to stand up to the Broken Consilium.

Only a week in town and he was already in the midst of drastic political disruption. Ermac knew nothing else beyond the public outrage toward the Hierarch. If the noise was that loud, someone definitely wasn't doing their job.

He arrived seeing a few familiar faces, Elle being one. This wasn't social hour however. A Duel Arcane was serious business. Ermac took a seat on the sidelines. Dressed in jeans and a t-shirt - just in case things went south. If it did happen, he could skitter run to a better vantage point to throw in with the others.
