Following the GPS guides the car into a parking lot behind the Hitcher's Post motel.
Dianes's car is parked in the parking lot around the back of the motel. There are ten spots with two lamps mounted to the exterior of the motel, designed to guide one's way in the dark. It was lucky that afternoon sun was beating down, for Diane's car would have been shrouded in darkness come nightfall. A quick glance up confirms that the light directly above is missing its bulb. The battered sedan is nondescript, except for the blinking red alarm light set into the dashboard.

From the parking lot, the closest thing is the front desk of the motel. It is a separate, squat building underneath an old light post. The front desk of the motel is the kind of quiet, depressing place that most people are thrilled to deal with and leave behind, as quickly as possible. The half glass window reveals no one in view.

Further down this quiet, desolate road are the only other two signs of human occupation that you've seen in thirty minutes of driving. The first is a run down gas station with attached convenience store, the dingy and faded sign proclaiming 'The Rest Stop'. The price of gas is exorbitant and you imagine the half dozen people before you who mutter under their breath as they pay, because where else would they go?

The squat wooden building across the street from the Rest Stop appears to be a restaurant. You can see two Honda sedans, about ten years old, parked in the small quaint parking lot of the building. The windows of the building are darkened. A red generic sign reads 'closed' across the front window.

Around the motel, old trees stretch up towards the sun. The heat is oppressive, the buzz of insects simmers from beneath the boughs of the trees. You've found the one preserved pocket of isolation and wild wilderness of Southern California in an age where most things are being paved and new condos are being slapped up. You hear the sharp, warning bark of a pair of angry, riled dogs from somewhere. The sound is coming from off in the trees. No road turns that way...

A glance around proves that no one seems to be walking by and there are no breaks in the cheap blinds that shroud the window eyes of the hotel. You note an old, dingy Toyota Tacoma in white at the last motel room, farthest from the check in office and convenience store. An old growth tree nearly blocks the last motel room completely.

She pulled the vehicle to the side of the road a moment, stepping out of the vehicle and slipping her way to the back with the others, kneeling on the back seat to dig around a little in one of her bags, before pulling out her vest. She cast a brief look to the others in the vehicle, before simply sighing and pulling her shirt over her head, setting it aside to put her vest on properly. She spent too much time on sets, with her nephew and sister, and too many others to really care much what they saw. Oh. A bra. Heaven forbid they see that lacy little black thing! It wasn't like they'd never opened a magazine, and she sure as hell had nothing to be ashamed of under her shirt.

Once it was thoroughly secured in place, Jo pulled her shirt back over her head, fiddling with it a little before deciding it was fine and sitting herself down in her spot, finally. "So, you can all see what's up around here. I don't know what Diane's car looks like and I don't have the best idea where we go from here. Any bright ideas?" she inquired as she pulled her gun from it's location and checked it over, not removing the safety yet.

Alistair did not mind for a moment seeing Jodie with her shirt off. It made him think of things he'd rather be doing, places he'd rather be doing them, and how much less he'd like to be wear --

    Timing!

"Well, can't hurt to check the one car that I see in the lot," he said with a chinjut toward the white Toyota at the far room. "Good to look around, too. Maybe we'll find something of use. Plus, it stands to reason she parked outside her motel room."

He got his sunglasses good and ready and frowned. The sun boiling him was not his idea of fun.

"If the motel guy is in on it, we need to be careful. Stay together."

He looked around. So much desolation, so many unfamiliar places. It wouldn't be that hard to watch them if someone really wanted to.

Glancing around, there were two vehicles in the lot besides Jodie's. The first was a battered Tacoma. The second was a sedan with a blinking alarm light. Recalling Diane's text, there was a line about the 'Alrm fake take wht u need hlp me n ur thngs free.'

Carefully giving the area a thorough look, she tried to figure out what the best course of action would be. "There are four vehicles," she clarified for Alistair. "Two in the lot and two that look totally too creepy to be just there by coincidence at a closed restaurant," Jo pointed out.

Thankfully they were the only ones in a van of any sort. "I'd really need a closer look than from here on anything else, but I didn't wanna pull up closer until I was sure we had a plan of some sort, you know? Besides, truth be told... unless that restaurant is entirely abandoned, why the heck is it closed in the middle of the day, anyway? Strikes me as a bit shady."

Of course, the whole place reminded her of a movie she'd seen once where people were trying to resolve the multiple personality disorder in some dude's head and it turned into a murderfest. Identity, wasn't it? John Cusack was a great actor, but being in the middle of a Thriller setting wasn't her idea of a good time. It was downright freaky.

"I doubt the motel is in on it. It's probably just the setting the real criminals chose. And the restaurant might be opening soon. Or if not, the two cars might belong to people who work there. Just because it's closed doesn't mean that no one is inside, or that the people inside aren't supposed to be inside. I say we should look around Dianne's car, see if anything grabs our attention, and then go check the motel room with the Tacoma outside it. That tree blocking the view of the room makes it a great place for, well, whatever all this is," Tal explained, suddenly speaking up from her place in the back seat. She'd been quiet on the way there, simply nodding when the others talked, to show she was listening, but now that they were there she was ready to act.

"Why don't you park one spot over from Dianne's car?" she suggested, bending down to set her pack onto the floor. She opened it up and starting pulling things out: two water bottles, several energy bars, some fruit, a black case, and then a shirt with something rolled up inside it. Deft motions removed the cloth, revealing the body of a BHP pistol. Another piece of clothing came out, was unrolled, and revealed two magazines. She packed everything away, except for the gun, one magazine, and the long-sleeved shirt, and then loaded the gun. Safety was checked, then she loosened her belt and scooted down in her seat so she could put the gun into her waistband. The shirt stayed balled up on her lap.

"Our plan should be simple. Find Dianne, get her safe, then figure out what's going on."

Alistair said, "Let's not make any assumptions just yet, but I like your plan in principle, Tal. One moment. Perhaps I can find some facts that will help us out. One of you should probably call our missing contact, hmm? See if she answers? I'll peek around and see if I can find anything..."

He fished out a pair of high-quality binoculars from his gear. Only the best money can buy for the English gun shop owner! The binoculars were positively outstanding. Nightvision options. Zoom features. A fucking thermal setting. The binoculars cost more than most people made in months. Al had picked them up once he had realized that some of the things that went bump in the night were pretty damn good at hiding. Heat signatures through walls could provide a ton of advanced notice.

Patiently, he scanned from each to each - one building at a time, at all four, to see if he saw anything of interest. First, he did it with mundane zoom settings. Then, he used the thermal imaging setting to see what he could find. Were there people inside? What was there to be seen?

To Jodie's naked eye, she saw signs of isolation. The automobiles were the only sign of human habitiation at all. No person was in sight. There was no radio playing or outside noise, besides the low hum of an air conditioning unit at the last motel room. Compared to Santee, this was a virtual ghost town. The rest stop - which appeared to be open - had no cars parked there. Where was the attendant? Had they walked from somewhere? That hinted at housing somewhere nearby and you had seen no sign of it.

The Manager's office had lights on and most likely was occupied. One had to expect that if the manager was in on it, that there had to be a manager somewhere about. The glass screen showed no one in sight.

There was a slow movement at the restaurant- the flick of the heavy blinds over the window by the door. The silhouette of a man was visible, peering out at your direction. The distance between the van parked off road from the motel and the restaurant was fairly good. He likely could make out the van, you reasoned.

    Scene Three
    To Alistair alone -

    The Motel

The motel has twelve rooms. Some moments tick by as he moves along each one, each one devoid of anything of interest - until the last. That one way at the end with the Tacoma parked in front of it has a smaller, friable image of someone moving very quickly within the room. It was a bit difficult to focus and those watching note Al's continues tracking to keep up with the person in the room. Perhaps an adolescent or someone frail was inside?

The Manager's Office of the Motel

As Alistair focusses on the manager's building he noted a two signals that were fuzzy. Both of the images were slightly faint and fuzzy, suggesting that a few walls were between Alistair and the two beings giving off input. The man's form was bent in a sitting position and he was very still. The second was a smaller form, flat on the floor and inhuman in shape. The shape was rather bulky. Pointed ears, boxy head...

    The Rest Stop

The rest stop had little to no warmth to speak of. Small warm boxes could be microwaves or heating appliances. There were some substansial dark areas that were cold, large blocks against a wall. Freezers or coolers of some kind. There was no sign of life within.

    The Restaurant

The Restaurant was a verifiable hot spot of activity. For all of the quiet and desolation that you see with the naked eye, within the walls of the expansive building were several warm bodies. Two people were together in seated positions, relatively still about five feet from the main door. The third was standing upright beside the main door, right in front of the large window. The most perplexing signals were the short, quick moving heat signatures. Like the manager's office, these were inhuman in shape. They were perhaps 43 – 56 cm at the shoulder. There was a quick moving box shape head, but the ears were indeterminate. There were three quick moving forms of these, prowling around the front door of the restaurant.

"Motel's dead except for one person inside the last motel room by the Tacoma. Small, quick moving... maybe a teen or someone frail? They're all over the place in there," he reported, moving on to the managers office. "The manager's office has something that looks like a big dog, flat on the floor, and a sitting person. They're warm, but not moving."

The Brit frowned as he moved on. "The rest stop has no signs of life, but some coolers inside? Hmm. And... oh." On the restaurant.

"The restaurant is absolutely hot. Two people, sitting five feet from the door together. A third standing beside the main door in the big window there, and a bunch of... half-meter tall non-human things moving around quickly? Animals of some kind, perhaps? Boxy head, unsure about the ears..." He frowned. "That's weird as hell. Someone call Dianne, would you? I'm wondering if that's whre she is. Maybe one of them picks up the phone."

Alistair kept on watching the restaurant, curious as to what would happen next.

Sam nodded as he pulled out his phone and dialed Diane's number. He definitely appreciated Alistair's caution.

"Hopefully they do pick up. Maybe someone should listen around for the phone ringing while you watch for anyone who picks up a phone as I'm calling?"
