The ride along Route 50 is unremarkable, the dry, concrete ribbon carrying Roderick and Julian past Folsom, the El Dorado Hills, and towards their destination. The sky is clear and the nighttime landscape is surprisingly bright under the glare of the moon and stars. In less than an hour, the stolen Chrysler passes into Placerville city limits and they are treated to the sight of trees flanking the highway, the occaisonal dot of light from a neighborhood shining through. Yet as they come off of an overpass, Roderick and Julian spot a troubling sight across the highway. In the shadow of a ravine is the shape of a car wrapped around a tree. It's lights are dead, and the few other travelers on the highway blaze by it obliviously. The flow of the highway forces them on, but soon they see an off ramp that loops back in the wreck's direction.

Roderick had spent the majority of the trip rambling on about one problem of the current generation or another. It didn't get better if music was put on. However, the moment he caught eyes on that wreck, he shut up quickly. As he took the sight in, his body tensed up and he gives Julian a look as they approched the offramp. "Chose quickly," the old soldier said, a tone of caution in his voice, "I ran into too many situations that involved scenes like this that lead to an IDE goin off if not an ambush. Unless you know that it isn't that or that we can survive, I say we move on." The vampire's grip on the stearing wheel tightens as he waits for the suggestion, letting the car ease over to the middle ground between the offramp and the rest of the highway, but favoring going on.

Julian found the way roderick had been rambeling on about problems of the current generation quite amusing. Though he wasn't going to say that to Roderick's face. When the soldier pulled his attention to the wreck at the side of the road he spoke up. "I don't think there would be a bomb or ambush there. nobody knows we're coming and we aren't in irak. Road bombs aren't that common here. In my opinion it's best that we check it out. I doubt it has anything to do with our mission, but there is a small chance of it and I rather not risk missing any clues of the sort." Julian gave his own opinion. "If it's nothing we'll just call the ambulance for them and get on our way."

Roderick grunted his disapproval but eased the car over to the offramp and eased off the accellerator, keeping the pace just fast enough that they won't get rearended but could get a clear look at the wreck as they came closer to it. The closer they got to it, the more he eased to the side, ignoring the objections of the bumps that made a rumble sound go though the vehicle.

By the time they reached the closest point to the wreck, the car had only on set of wheels on the side of the road. The other side rested on the grass off the road. Roderick put the car in park and put on the emergency flashers before pulling out his firearm and made sure a round was chambered. "I might be paranoid," he said before flicking the slide back in place, "but I'd rather be paranoid and alive than not and dead." He gives Julian a look, making it clear he wasn't happy about this, as he poped the seatbelt off and stepped out of the car.

The air is cool, even to their undead flesh, and the ground shortly falls into a steep incline that goes into the ravine. It's not unbelievable that someone might have simply lost control and slid into the ravine, and then a tree, but it is odd that no one has apparently noticed it, or that the vehicle's lights aren't on, though that could explain the accident. As the pair get's closer, they can see that the car is a dark grey Honda Accord. It's front end is accordioned around the tree and the front window is smashed. The driver's door is partially ajar, and when it is eased open it reveals a the gruesome sight of a dead man in a suit. It's clear that his head hit the steering wheel, there's blood on the rubber and his forehead, but the side of his neck is a gristly ruin, as is his left arm above the elbow, the cloth torn open to reveal bits of meat and bone.

"Well, I don't think a doctor can do much to help him anymore. Pity." Julian said as he got out of the car and walked closer to the wreck. Keeping eye out for anything out of the ordinary.

Roderick doesn't make the mistake of going out into the darkness without a flashlight. He holds the gun in one hand while shining the light with his other as he approches the car. He stays near Julian as the two of them look around the wreckage.

Thanks to the aid of their modern torches, the two kindred are able to make out a few more details about the scene. As their light casts off the shadows, they make out dents in the roof of the car, along with a few traces of a black sap-like substance. A faint odor of rust clings to the black liquid, almost hidden under the cloying smell of damp, rotting vegetation. However, the sap from the tree the car lies under runs much clearer, and sweeter, than whatever that black, tarry substance is, as evidenced by the pool dripping under the car's front bumper. Another look around the vehicle shows some of the same black liquid flecked against the driver's door handle and a few specs in the grass that lead back up the ravine and to a black spill of liquid on the road. It looks almost like oil, though it lacks the common iridescent hues under the beams of their flashlights. After a moment of staring at it, Julian notices distinct black smears, as though something dragged itself from the road and down into the ravine. As he peers closer at the inky trail he realizes he sees what looks like a partial hand print at the edge of the road, and then the trail of something with two legs and boots dragging itself through the grass and towards the wreck.

Jullian observed the wreckage, the light of his flashlight sweeping over it. He raised his eyebrow when he noticed the black sap thing on the car. "you know what that black stuff is Roderick?" He piped up as he wearily looked closer at it. When he saw the black handprints he got a bad feeling about it. "Roderick. you see that handprint and that trail?" He pointed towards it. "Something dragged itself out here. Maybe there is another survivor out there." He didn't sound to sure about that though. A strange black flued that he didn't recognize, a trail that went from the road into the ravine. A ravaged corpse. He just hoped it was him being paranoid but something just didn't add up.

"Keep your eyes out. This might just be something more then just an accident."
