In Downtown Sacramento along The Kay lies the wintery attraction of the public ice skating rink. Unlike most skating rinks people are accustomed too, this one isn’t that cold. It may not have been shorts worthy, but it was certainly more pleasant than snowpants, parka and looking like you’re right out of A Christmas Story. The ice is super cooled at the ground providing for an enjoyable experience without being bundled up.

If there wasn’t live music some evenings it featured a wonderful variety of music for all ages. From pop rock, classic rock and oldies; there is something for everyone. Don’t have skates! No problem, skate rental, gloves and socks (no joke) are offered and admission is only $8. Currently, it’s just past six o’clock the temperature in Sacramento is about 45F (7.2C). May not be parka weather, but a jacket of some sort may be a good idea.

    L’aire SL4/Pres3

The Fairest Dancer, having grown up in the northern part of the U.S. was accustomed to colder temperatures. One favorite past time she had was ice skating. Sure it was similar to dancing on ice, but sometimes the lifting of spins and twirls high in the air was just as fun as the other dancing she did.

Arriving in Perry diCarto ’s convertible with the top up for a change, L’aire’s skates were sitting on the floor of the vehicle. The skate guards were on, despite not being as sharp as hockey stakes the Fairest didn’t want to damage upholstery nor nick the blades of the skates. She may not have been a professional skater, yet the Dancer didn’t want to take them in either. L’aire wore an outfit she didn’t think would come out of the closet again. It may have looked thin, but the top jacket with a tiny flash of teal was very warm, along with matching pants. All very form fitting, and for fun a teal skirt over the top. It wasn’t necessary, but L’aire did like a bit of flair in her skate.

Turning to Perry before getting out of the car, the Winter Fairest flashed a grin. "Wow, what a perfect day for this. No wind and a bit over cast. Hope the music is good too."

"I know, right?" the Shadowsoul replied, a broad smile mirroring L'aire's on his face as he pulled into the lot. diCarto wore his classy black leather jacket, jeans and a wool sweater beneath, with matching gloves and a pair of skates that he'd only used a few times over the years. He enjoyed skating - and in such beautiful winter weather, too!

"So do you skate often?" he asked as he opened his door and went into the back to grab his little duffel bag with his towel, skates and water bottle in it.

Rook rarely got uncomfortable in any temperatures. For one thing, he was from New York, for another, he was practically a living furnace, and on top of that, should heat actually become a problem through those things, he was perfectly capable of making the surrounding area warm enough for everyone else to settle down in.

Not that he would be doing that today, because melting the entire ice rink when he stepped onto it would defeat the point of skating.

The Metalflesh walked to the public ice rink, wearing his trademark suit and mirrored sunglasses, and with the entire purpose of his visit here at his shoulder. He glanced sidelong at Anya, flashing her a slight, corner of the mouth smile.

"If I fall over and embarrass you, you'll have to forgive me,"
he said lightly. "It's been a while since I've skated."

Just saying those words brought about memories of the cabin by the lake, and frozen winters, two young children building snowmen on a bright, sparkling field, breath misting in the air...

Rook often thought that Winter, more than anything, was the season of nostalgia. Lately, though, he'd found he was still capable of making new, warm memories, even if they never would quite live up to the life before. But they were good.

Sacramento has been great for Lou and first experiences. More and more, the Draconic has been exploring things he had never done (or simply couldn't do) before his durance transformed his body into something more... fit. Even so, there were challenges, as he learned when visiting the skate park. He wore his usual workout clothes - a large pair of sweatpants and a hooded sweatshirt. Simple wear that didn't rip when he exerted himself. Perfect for skating... if only he could find a pair of skates.

"I'm sorry, we just don't have any in your size, " said the rental attendant to the distraught fairest. "You can find them online or have them ordered, but we just don't have any for rent right now."

With a sigh, Lou muttered a "Thank you, " and began to leave the rink, experiencing a sudden shift in mood as he noticed Perry diCarto and L'aire leaving Perry's nice, but unfortunately tiny vehicle. Lou waved as he walked over to the couple, smiling, excited to see them.

Shin sat on a bench at the sidelines of the rink, drinking hot chocolate. It perhaps wasn't cold enough for hot chocolate, but a vendor nearby had been selling it and it had smelled amazing, and as he cooled off, he found that he was glad for both the hot drink and for the thick hoodie he wore.

He'd been here for an hour or so already, working on his skating skills. A few of the guys from work had a just-for-fun hockey team that played on the weekends, and last week they'd been short a goalie and had invited him along. He'd turned out to be fairly decent at it too, despite having not skated since he was very young. He might not have been able to keep up out on the ice proper, but in goal he could set his feet, keep his balance, and move only when action came to his side of the ice. Their team had lost, but it hadn't been for lack of trying on the temple guardian's part. The other team's captain had congratulated him after the game, saying that 'his guys had been afraid to get too close to the goal - you looked like you'd take off one of our arms if we got too close!'.

Shin had been a little embarrassed over that - he hadn't realized that he'd been that into the game, but it had felt so good to have something to guard again, even if that something was only a 6 x 4 foot square of net and ice.

The feel of other Lost approaching made him look up from his thoughts, and he caught sight of three familiar faces and a few others he hadn't met before. He waved, smiling, and gestured to the empty space on the bench beside him. It looked like the others intended to skate as well and they'd need a spot to lace up their skates.

Quite contrary to the attire that Anya usually wore, for the outing to the ice rink she was dressed with the assumption that there might be a few tumbles onto the ice. The black jeans that she wore allowed for movement but, should she find herself skating on her ass instead of her skates, the thicker material would provide adequate padding. The Fairest wore no jacket, being accustomed still to the temperatures in the colder states. However the thin dark purple jumper: functional and form-fitting, kept out enough of the cold.

Besides, standing alongside Rook kept her quite warm enough.

She did not have skates of her own, but with the opportunity to rent that posed no problem. Ice skating was not something she had ever done very often as an adult, but she had occasionally gone along to her former local rink when the kids wanted to go. It brought back some amusing memories and, there with the Metalflesh, she was sure that there would be some equally funny moments.

Anya did fully expect to fall at least one on the ice; but it was Rook's remark that elicited a quick laugh.

"Somehow I don't think you will be the one to trip," Anya teased gently. Peering around the rink she caught sight of a few familiar faces, and she raised a hand in greeting from where she stood.

Having taken a look at what Perry was wearing that night; on the way over, L’aire may have slightly admired the fashions that the Shadowsoul wore. She remembered that life, how the glitz and glam enticed her and took her mind off Arcadia at the time. The Fairest recalled how the Italian easily fed her desires then but it wasn’t without the price of being silent among other things it eventually cost her.

Quickly pulled back into reality after Perry agreed with her, she easily replied. “As much as I’ve been able to while traveling. Some places like Moscow and more northern cities we traveled had more rinks during the colder months.” L’aire suddenly recalled a favorite place as she got out of the car and grabbed her skates

“Oh, like when I was in Harbin, China for the Ice Festival. Breath taking sculptures.” Adding just as she saw another Fairest walk up to them.

It was hard to miss him as the very tall Draconic walked toward them. And she matched his smile in greeting. “Hey Lou, out for the ice this evening?” Meeting his eyes a moment then looking toward the Rink not far from the lot. It was also hard not to miss the other Purply Draconic and the Metalflesh. The Winter Dancer was a bit surprised to see them partaking in something like this. But that was stereotyping, and L’aire was actually just amused more so at the contrast of fire and ice. If Rook and Anya were to look her direction she’s smile back to them.

Something green caught her eyes before panning back to Perry and Lou. It was green and statuesque. Clearly that of another Lost and L’aire’s eyes certainly told that she was curious about who it was.

"I've seen how you move. You'll be fine," Rook replied, eyeing the Purple Draconic. Anya was extremely graceful, almost serpentine when she wanted to be, and he could hardly imagine the ice being brave enough to trip her up. Of course, he himself was actually considerably more graceful and deft than people imagined. Including himself, at times - he was so used to that powerful restraint and care that he took with everything, and the memory of the clumsy, half-functional steel tower that had stumbled out of the hedge was still bright in his mind.

He had trained himself to move quickly and cautiously, and have a good sense of balance. He didn't have those problems now - he could hold a glass between his rigid fingers without smashing it instantly, and he could corner without his knees locking. But he remembered what it was like to be like that.

"Looks like there's some others around, too," he added, raising one rigid hand to wave at the small group he recognised from the Freehold, a little smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.

Perry listened attentively as she talked about the places she had been a little, wishing wistfully that one day he could travel like L'aire had. It wasn't that he didn't have the money. More that between the business of law and the fact that he had nobody to share such a trip with, it never really came up. He'd been to Britain and France - but who hadn't? As she talked about Harbin, he grinned. "You know, one of these days, I might have to ask you to show me the slideshow of your trip," he quipped, his eyes plainly intrigued. "It sounds like such an interesting life, touring. How long did you travel for?"

"Hey, Lou," the Spring Courtier called. He couldn't help but imagine how handy Lou would be in pick-up hockey as an enforcer. The mental image of the Draconic bowling forwards over with hipchecks at a regular man's chest level amused him for a moment. "How you doing, man?"

Perry waved at Summer's mighty couple and Shin Wei, catching the inviting motion from the foo dog. "You guys met Shin Wei before?" he asked pleasantly, nodding toward the Earthbones on the bench. It was plain in his voice that he thought Shin was all right.

Anya's attention slipped away from the other Lost, several feet away as they began to converse. At least for the moment she did not immediately move over. Her task just then was to acquire skates and try on a pair to determine size and comfort levels. Too tight or two loose and, once on the ice, there would inevitably be problems. It was key that one found a pair they were quite comfortable with.

The sudden but brief memory of running through that very same process with her first daughter, slipped into her mind. At the time it had been an exciting and important rite of passage for the girl; and Anya could not quite help but wonder if she still found the time to skate now sometimes. With a quick shake of her head, the Fairest tried to force away the thought before it could press in and darken her mood for the day.

She squeezed Rook's arm and smiled in a manner that was slightly fainter than before. "Thank you for the vote of confidence," Anya laughed softly before moving forward to queue for the skates. She ordered the shoe sizes for the both of them several seconds later, and then peered around for sitting space.
