(Hospital) Beat the Press

Daysha heard about Derevko suddenly being found, there was relief, confusion and worry. Perhaps it was a motherly thing or that of a police comrade. Either way, as soon as the detective found out she drove to the hospital. At least at present time she wasn’t out on a case for the moment. But the call could come in any time. There was that little part of her that felt a bit of guilt. The last time she saw him was the night they wandered into the park looking for people. It was fucked up on many accounts. Daysha'd practically sped there before the fucking press could get a hold of him. Hopefully that room had some sort of lock on the door or a fucking guard, if not she was calling one. Like he needed that shit after missing for so long.

Derevko may have been a jackass at times but still she respected him, no matter how much shit she gave him. When she got into the lobby she asked reception for his room after flashing her badge. Grabbing an elevator, she made her way up to the floor he was on. Daysha hated elevators. It may have been an unnatural hatred, but after she’d seen many suddenly ‘fall’ down a shaft or ‘accidents’ it was to be expected. Those were usually nasty cases, sometimes the victims were squished beneath the elevator car. Shuttering after getting off on that floor, she stepped out and checked the directional signs for the room number.

Derevko wasn't expecting visitors, because he was pretty sure his 'escape' or whatever it was, hadn't been announced publically anyway, and Grace and he had...

...'spoken' was one word for it, but it had really been considerably louder than that.

She wouldn't be visiting again, anyway. Not until she'd cooled down. He didn't mind that. Sometimes, that was just the fucking way things were between him and her. Angry, and loud. It was the only way they seemed to communicate outside of the bedroom, and in it...

Yeah, that probably wasn't gonna be happening again anyway. It had been bad enough before, some fucked up reflection of a time when they'd been married. Now it was just... yeah.

'I'm back honey. Incidentally, if you got knocked up from this, our kid might turn out to be a horrible demonspawn. Just FYI. Oh, and if I die? Erik might become one too.'

    Yeah, fuck that.

The scarred agent sat up on the hospital bed, trying to keep his concentration on the newspaper that he was reading. Trying to catch up with the fucking world. It seemed like, inconsiderately, things had just kept happening while he'd been locked away.

Daysha turned down the hall toward Derevko’s room number. Her walk was purposeful, as always. She didn’t feel the need to run, it wasn’t like he was a lover, fuck buddy…or whatever. But the urge was probably from guilt. The detective really hoped he didn’t get carted away by vampires, nearly drained and left for dead. If that was the case, she’d probably go on hiatus at work and go on a staking spree.

Shit, I should have brought something. Daysha cursed herself for forgetting something like that. The damn etiquette ingrained in her head from her bitch of a mother.

As she got up to the door of Derevko’s room, the Detective slowed up the pace. Glancing up and down the hallway for anything out of the ordinary she turned back to the door and gently knocked on it. Daysha didn’t want to wake him if he was resting.

Leonard Jaeger drove up to the hospital a few minutes later. When his organization had received notification of Derevko's survival and return, the agent didn't know what to think. He'd almost given up his partner, or rather coworker, for lost and he wondered if he should even be there, parked in the lot out front, debating whether to go in. The guy was kidnapped and homeland security wasn't able to find him. Jaeger wasn't able to find him. He blamed himself for his own incompetence. Even after running the whole crime scene through his mind he couldn't fit together the puzzle pieces. If anything he should just be there to hear it from Derevko.

He walked up to the entrance and stopped at the front desk to ask for Derevko's number while holding up his badge for credentials. He was met with a suspicious glare, perhaps from seeing one too many badges for the same patient. Jaeger walked to the elevator and pressed the button while he waited for it to descend.

Derevko felt a flicker of fire bursting in his throat at the knock on the door. Like he needed a fucking reminder of the taint in him - it was there the moment something unexpected happened, tugging at his consciousness like a particularly fucking annoying itch. He just couldn't scratch it.

Not without burning the ward down.

The Lucifuge agent had a distinctive, sickening feeling that it wanted him to use it. Like the fire was another entity that just happened to have taken up residence inside his rib cage.

Fucking great. Now I'm just going more insane than I already did. Fuck.

He looked towards the door, debating for a moment. Probably just a nurse or something, making sure he was awake. Or someone coming to check his fucking charts, or whatever. Better to deal with it now.

"Yeah, I'm up. What?" Derevko said, after a brief silence. His voice was still hoarse, raspy with the drug-induced dryness. Thank fuck that shit was mostly out of his system. Even after his imprisonment, he at least had a decent immune system.

It was the sterilized presence of the hospital that made Daysha uneasy. Didn’t matter how many times she came to a place like this it just smelled…hospital.

Hearing Derevko answer with a raspy sort of voice, far different from his normal snarkyness. She hesitated a moment before talking. Cause this is why I hate hospitals “Hey.” Pausing a moment and popping her head in a little further. “Are you decent, it’s Jackson.”

Then the Detective thought she should at least ask. “And are you up for a visit?” Daysha hoped that didn’t sound like what she was thinking, which was more like a questioning.

The lights dropped slowly from one floor number to the next signifying the lift's progression to the ground level. Lynx scratched his head, wondering what he was going to say. Everything he thought of sounded like dribble. Sorry, buddy, I did my best but I guess they just covered their tracks really really well. So, did it turn out we were right about that conspiracy? Maybe he should have just brought a fruit basket or flowers or something.

The elevator doors opened finally and the anxious agent boarded, hitting the number to D's floor. Maybe he'd be lucky and the guy was still sleeping. He could find a piece of paper and just leave a note then.

"No, it's like one of those fuckin' hospital pornos in here," Derevko shot back instantly, his hard blue eyes not even flickering from his newspaper. Sometimes, it seemed like this mouth just had a mind of its own when it came to retorts.

On the other hand, it was sort of a sign that he was feeling better. He honestly hadn't been expecting anyone to visit, and somewhere inside his scarred mess of a heart, it was actually sort of nice that Daysha had bothered, even if it was just to briefly poke him with a stick and note that he wasn't dead.

    "C'mon in, Jackson, I'm fine."

The detective was actually glad to hear him talk like that. A sign that wherever he had been didn’t soften him to the point of something unrecognizable. Of course she’d seen people who were kidnapped or POW’s who’d been changed and appreciated life. Which was all fine and dandy, and maybe the Agent was like that. But resuming a normal life wasn’t bad either.

Walking into the hospital room, the Unionist really hoped what she saw wasn’t a tortured man but she’d keep the banter equal to his at the moment. “Aww damn, I was really hoping it was that style of hospital. I was going to change it on my preferences at work.” It was clear by her tone Daysha was joking with Derevko and not poking fun at him. Like usual.

Stepping in to the end of the bed or so, she surveyed him a little and nodded to him. Daysha, who was always able to find something to say was speechless for a moment. How the hell do I start this conversation? So who ran off with you? Where the fuck were you…and then she had it. “If you wanted a vacation, I’m sure you could have just put in a request for it.”

Jaeger continues to wait in the elevator car, debating how bad it would be for him to smoke in a hospital.
