I sort of looked back to see if we had a movie review thread somewhere. And, well couldn't find one.

My son and I just got back from Sherlock Holmes Game of Shadows. Wow...

I'm not entirely sure why it was rated PG13 other than violence that was not any different than Spiderman or Xmen. Not to mention, there's no swearing considering the time period it's set in. If you have kids around 9ish and do let them watch movies similar, then it's ok to take them to this. It was action packed and kept us guessing. My son was on the edge of his seat at one point. It's definitely one to watch or even buy (if you're one to watch them over and over again).

Robert Downy Jr. keeps getting better. I am so glad this guy returned to the world of acting. The over all acting in the movie was brilliant, the choreography of some of the scenes was masterful. I do enjoy how they preplay out in slow stop motion some action parts that you probably would not catch all the details because of their pace. There were some interesting historical details about this as well, even though it was fictitious.

I give this 5 out of 5 stars!

A lot of good trailers too. MIB3 was one and... Rock of Ages... Tom Cruise is the lead... O.o? The new Batman trailer was there Zomg!!! Paranorman... which looked lame... really lame... For my son to say it looked stupid, that's not promising.

(Side note, if you do end up posting in here, it would be awesome if you'd mention if it was kid friendly or not. Someone didn't bother to tell me how bad Watchmen was...)

I went to see We Bought a Zoo...

I kept wishing I had brought something to blow my nose in. It didn't help that I had watched the trailer for Big Miracle either. I would have been fine if it had been more centered on the animals but it was centered around the family. I'll admit, the daughter was a delight to watch, she really fit the role perfectly.

The saddest part had to be when the male lead was going down memory lane, I'm not going to say much beyond the fact it didn't help that the lead winds up crying during this part either. I stilled liked the movie and I think I'd watch it again.

As for being kid friendly, well, the teenage son draws some gruesome drawings that I believe isn't all that child friendly. Seriously, the first one is just mind blowing as it's the only one that is colored, the rest are just black and white, which is likely why they are so creepy to look at.

Thought I'd throw a review up since this movie largely got blown off as a slasher vehicle for Megan Foxy to prance around in.

Honestly, that's not a bad thing to watch for a couple of hours but I think there's a lot more to the movie than that.

This is like a dark comedy. Think Army of Darkness or Zombieland and you're on the right track. It's not afraid to make fun of itself, the genre, or be trite. It knows what it is, and it does a damn good job of it.

    Synopsis
A band named Low Shoulder decides to sacrifice a virgin in a pact with Dark Powers to become rich and famous. Unfortunately, Megan Fox isn't a virgin and the spell goes wrong, with her returning from the grave possessed. Cue mayhem. Her best friend, played by Amanda Sexyfied Seyfried, is the only one that figures out what's what.

It's a fun premise that has brilliant moments. It's dark as hell, and the ending is pretty cool. The swimming pool scene is so epic I still laugh when I think about it.

And I kinda like the song.

So if you have the opportunity, and nothing better to do, give it a chance.

THIS IS NOT A FAMILY FRIENDLY MOVIE.

    Skyline

Came out last year. It looked like it was going to be a good sci-fi suspense flick. Uh no. Although at first it seemed like it had a good start. Then it took a turn for the worst.

94 minutes of my life that I won't get back.

    Insidious

I gotta say, this one kept me guessing for a while even at the ending. Considering a lot of horror/suspense movies are predictable. Now, I don't know much about changeling, but something about how the game's been described to me seems like this movie reflects in a way. The movie is about a boy who goes into a coma and then weird shit happens. Then it continues to get weirder. I'd probably rewatch it if I had the chance.

Man, don't let the 6/10 on IMDB or the "Oh, this story again" synopsis keep you from giving this flick a try. I watched it on Netflix (get it while it's steaming streaming!) last night, because my friend and coworker said it had some cool fights in it. He's a 4th degree Bujinkan black belt, so I tend to follow that advice, lol.

But there was more! It actually isn't one of those "let's drag some famous people in for a scene or two to sell this thing" movies that are hitting DVD shelves like the plague. Josh Hartnet, Gakt, Woody Harrelson, and Ron Perlman actually carry it from start to finish. Randomly: a wild Demi Moore appears.

And the cinematography deserves an award. It's one of the visually most fun-to-watch things I've seen. They do a lot of on-camera stage tricks with lighting and set rolling that is honestly fun to see in a film from time to time. It clocks in a little on the long side at 124 minutes, but is worth a try. I think the ED crowd can appreciate it.

No nudity/ excessive gore, but it's Rated R and earns it.

    Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

So I saw this in the IMAX because I was expecting to be blown away.

I mean, identity switches, really high jumps, disavowed secret agents, this must be the same tired old shit that is every Mission: Impossible!

We mixing it up a little this time, Tom Cruise shares bad-ass screen time with Jeremy Renner and his age is finally starting to show via bags under his eyes that you literally can't stop staring at.

    Oooh, aaaaah.

I think the best part is the mildly amusing scene of Anil Kapoor (the game show host from Slumdog Millionaire) trying to seduce Paula Patton.

I was really hoping for some fun mindless action and cool special effects. I feel like I got a big, cold, sticky helping of leftovers.

    Shivers of the Vampire

    *Not for Kids*

I found this little gem on Netflix. Some movies are waiting to be discovered. Some movies are waiting for greatness. This movie is waiting for an MST3K rifftrack...

I don't know where to begin. It's basically a 70 French extra-soft core porn. And by extra soft, I mean there are boobies. Apparently, in the 70's, lesbians weren't allowed to touch below the second rib...

If you can get past the odd bouts of nudity, you find something much more trippy. I could only stand to watch it in fast forward, so my most basic understand of the moves boils down to a few points:

    - A grand father clock is to the French, as a blue police call box is to the English

    - A vampire must pose dramatically after feeding, staring straight ahead

    - French men hate being woken up by two naked women in their bed

    - FX budgets were a lot less in the 70's

If anyone is bored, check this one out. Just make sure to put it in fast forward...

    In Time (R)

If you can watch Amanda Seyfried run around in a cocktail dress or other short skirts for two hours, this movie is watchable.

That's... pretty much the only upside.

I suppose supporting parts by Matt Bomer, Alex Pettyfer, Olivia Wilde, and Cillian Murphy provide plenty of secondary eye candy as well, but, honestly:

    This

The sad thing is, I don't feel tawdry at saying that's the only value in the movie. At all. Because it's that bad.

Trying to describe this movie is a trope already in itself. Google "In Time" and all you see is "Bonnie & Clyde" and "Philip K. Dick wannabe". So... yeah. You can't get away from those two descriptors because that's all there is.

    It's. So. Bad.

    Except This.

    Some arthouse style:

    The Fall
Not for kids, due to Anyone can Die, violence, attempted suicide, upset children. Teens should be fine though.

This movie has decent plot, some good characters, and fine special effects. What makes this story fantastic though, is that it is one of the most beautiful runs of moving pictures I have ever seen. Each scene seems deliberately chosen, carefully orchestrated, and stunningly beauiful. It's like going to a meseum, but the pictures move instead of you.
And did I mention they did it without any computer generated special effects at all? Everything is done the old fashioned way, which enhances the feel of really loosing it mentally.

    The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus
Probably not for kids, but probably fine for teens.

Where the Fall was beauty beyond compare, without any CG, this is CG taken to the extreme in persuit of exploration. While the plot focuses aroud various characters trying to escape the bonds they are encased in, the true pleasure for the story comes from the wild exploration you go through in people's heads. The twists throughout do a good job of keeping you engaged, but overall its not as good as the Fall.
Interesing note: this was the project Heath Ledger was working on when he died (hence why multiple other actors also play the same character as him).

    The Smurfs...

La la la la ...la... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Well, this is sort of a flashback for me. I grew up with them. In fact, I still have a collection of the little figures in my parent's garage.

The person who played Gargamel sucked (Hank Azaria). But aside from that, the movie was not bad. The kids seemed to like it and the CGI Azeral was really cute/funny. I even laughed several times. I was also shocked to read the voice of the Scottish Smurf Gutsy was voiced by Alan Cummings, I thought it was Mike Meyer. The people who did the voices of some of the smurfs were very spot on.

To be honest, I thought this movie was going to be stupid. But, we went this morning because our local theatre has 2 buck movies on Saturday and Sunday mornings in the winter. (And we had free passes haha).

So for a good kids movie, or a trip down memory lane. I'd actually recommend it. When we left the theatre, every kid was singing the song on the way out... cute and annoying at the same time lol.
