Beyond the Hollow's thick walls, an army marched to war. It was the final battle in a long, drawn out affair that had taken many sacrifices. The Hedge-Storm itself was trapped, lured into a powerful dream with Sacramento's own Lost acting as the bait and ensnared by the duelling Wyrds of Baron Fairweather and Gianna, forever being the cage that keeps the Storm secured.

Now, the Storm's three avatar's, the leaders of its great army know this. They have regrouped and discussed and know the only way to win this war is to rip down Tickle's toadstool fortress and awaken the Fae inside. Across the Hedge, the Storm's horde marches with this one intention in mind. The army of Sacramento rides out to meet it. A thousand strong, it is led by decorated and determined changelings that can feel this is the last battle where all will be won, or lost.

The trenches were hot today, glowing lichen lighting the way to base camp, a large cavern that held the main units defending the cave system under the main battlefield. One slope led directly behind Etalon's main force and was heavily fortified against Storm assaults. Sergeant Lamplight, a Wizened Miner, led them and was a thickset man with no neck with a hefty hammer made from ice strapped to his back. The fact it seemed to drip water down his back never seemed to bother him. Three tunnels led away from base camp , each one twisting underground, linking here and there to provide flanking positions above ground. Lamplight was conversing with several clockwork soldiers, each one armed with punch-daggers and blunderbuss weapons for short range effectiveness.

Nightfall slipped away, joining those headed for the tunnels. He was fairly sure Alice would take the open ground to use her rifle, and Sam would as well. For him, it would be the dark closeness of the underground.

With his ability to step through solids, he could cross from tunnel to tunnel if needs be, and the close quarters would suit and favor his unparalleled skill at monomacy. There was another, selfish reason. There would be blood, and for all that Alice had accepted the past, he didn't want her to see. To see him, covered in blood, cutting swaths through enemies until the dead were piled high. To see what only Sam might understand; a war that he had been waiting... hoping... for. Everything had been rushing towards this, his destiny, his potential, had come to this singularity in which he would be the perfect killing machine.

And if he failed... he didn't want Alice to see that, either.

The Lord of the Morning whispered softly to one of his blades, slicing his forearm and letting the blood trickle down it. "I will kill them all," he murmured softly, focusing his will upon the destruction of the Ear and his army. In the tunnels, the metal of weapons would call to him, revealing the enemy; his will and purpose would bring them to ruin.

    You're not welcome here

    Stop pretending pretender

Bert's shoulders slumped as he sat in his chair inside his tent, staring at what seemed like the comical image of him inside chainmail. That lasted for about five minutes until he realized he had no place in war. It was all a fallacy. He was an entertainer, a bard and nothing more. Anytime he was involved in a fight it was a reaction of survival. He could fight with his fists and that was it and that was great for someone in a bar, but for war...he felt like a child in an adult's clothing. The thought to him was as emasculating as it was when he tried football in high school just to please his father and he didn't fit there either. He didn't hate as much as the other boys did and they let him know it. But this was different. Instead of being scorned for being a fat sissy who couldn't run, he was going to be a fat liar who was going to die. He let a big sigh come out and rose from his seat. Jack was right, he was already dead. And he would know, the Doc had seen Bert as a patient. But now wasn't the time to come apart at the seems. Jack was taking care of that. For now he and the others needed a rock, maybe one to stand behind? Whatever, Bert was big and blue and that meant he'd be distracting. Plus, he had an appetite. It wouldn't solve the problems that were there, but it would certainly cause enough to make the job easier for the others. And that brought a little smile to the Ogre. He sighed again and expanded his chest and then stepped out of the tent, waiting for further instructions from the Sergeant, he was small, maybe if he tried hard enough Bert could throw him to where he needed to go.

"Hey man, you look nervous." The cold voice cuts through Bert's thoughts and looking around, he see's it is Harvey, his fellow Winter Courtier speaking. Once again, he is back looking like a Fairest, lithe and graceful and not the hulking marble Ogre that was strapped to the metal table. Short, black spikey hair and his mouth covered by shadows, Harvey thoughtlessly spun a thin stilletto blade through his fingers, the metal blade coated in soil to dull any glimmer from the soft lighting while he has managed to find some dark blue fatigues that could aid bledning into the shadows.

Meanwhile, as Nightfall concludes his ritual, Sergeant Lamplight heads over, breaking away from the group he was speaking with. Upon reaching the Fairest, he holds out his shovel-like hand.

"Just wanted to say how much of an honour it will be fighting by your side," he stated, voice like gravel.

Bert looks around and smiles when he recognizes the Sun Banisher. Figures someone would catch him offguard when he was most vulnerable. "Gee what gave it away Harvey?" Bert asks rhetorically as he turns to face his fellow courtier. "I dunno, guess I don't feel prepared enough for this type of thing but then again, is anyone ever?" he looks at Harvey, spinning his blade and making it look like it was the sexiest thing ever and says "Nevermind. I guess I should be basking in this you know? All this war and possibility of death, the fact that everything around us has gotten so shitty even Jack has lost his mind, it's all so depressing rather than scary. Sorta like a violent goodbye."

Nightfall takes the offered hand and shakes it, watching a small droplet of blood from his arm launch itself into the sky before falling into a small crimson sunburst on the floor. "The honor is mine, Sergeant," he replies with a smile. The Fairest in him wanted to offer a rousing speech; words of inspiration, words of hope. He did not. It seemed condescending, to those that had already been fighting, and dying.

"Do you have any maps? Or anything I should watch out for?"
he asked, acutely interested. Men, and hobs, he assumed would be there; what other monstrosities the Ear might have created or summoned from Arcadia, he had no idea. For all of his ability, Nightfall also understood the importance of being a student, and heeding the words of those more knowledgeable and practiced.

"Ain't that how goodbyes are supposed to be?" Harvey rhetorically asks, smirking. He slipped the blade away and drops down next to Bert. "Thing is, blood is blood, war is war. Just remember what you're fighting for and don't forget to keep your fucking head down if shots ring your way." He looks around at the clockwork soldiers and swiftly moves away to speak to one. Coming back, he is carrying two of the clockwork blunderbuss in his arms. He holds one out to Bert. "Here, Merry Christmas."

Nearby, Lamplight nods and digs out a map from one of his pockets, unfolding it before Nightfall.

"This is base camp," he states, pointing a dirty, stubby finger to a rough circle drawn on the paper. One tunnel leads away back towards Tickle's fortress. Several other circles are drawn with numerous tunnels linking them. Some are marked with 'X's, those that link directly to the cavern they were in. "These are caverns we control but only barely. We lost two laast week yet managed to regain them after you and your crew re-awoke. I can only guess that was when the Storm became trapped. However, fighting in these places," he says, pointing to 3 distinct circles marked with a roughly drawn skull, "are theirs. If we can control at least one, it will give us a major flanking position to strike into their ranks. However, everytime we attempt to do so, they try to flank us by attacking one of our crossed caverns. Rock and a hard place springs to mind," he states bluntly, the fatigue evident. "If we stretch ourselves too much, it opens up an opportunity for them to sneak through, and that bastard Tickle won't spare us more soldiers."

"How many guard these critical points?" Nightfall asked, looking at the map. "And do they reinforce one with reserves from the others?"

If they did, he wondered if it would be possible for him to strike at one, then phantom away to another which became depleted.

Bert holds Harvey's gift in both hands and looks down at him with a smile. "Gee Thanks Harvey" he says and then places it on the side of his belt. "Which tunnel do you think needs the most attention at the moment?" he asks, trying not to focus on the hallmark moment and getting his head where it needs to be.

Harvey shrugs. "Dunno, but looks like Nightfall is talking to the right guy." Shouldering the blunderbuss, the faux-Fairest moves over to join the pair, keeping quiet as his eyes scans the map.

Sergeant Lamplight, noting the new arrivee, moves aside.

"Reinforcements take a while to get anywhere, even for us. We can't be waving flags around down here unlike up there," he says, pointing upwards. "Luckily," he says with heavy emphasis and a dirty smile, "I can relay orders for units using my Kith gift comes in handy. All we need are fast runners between units."

"Which is where I come in, I take it?" Terri enters base camp wearing a tight sleeveless top and short-shorts for easier moving. Her sling is secured in a thigh holster while the vine-whip is tied around her mid-riff. She also has a satchel over one shoulder.

Lamplight nods, crossing his arms. Obviously, the idea of having a woman in his command seems a little distracting but needs must, as General Etalon explained. "Yes. I'll need you running between tunnels to act as messenger. That way, we might be able to out flank them before they can get reinforcements to any one place."
